An office created by Act of Continental Congress, February 7, 1781. This office was designed to supersede the Board of War. Benjamin Lincoln was the first Secretary (1781-83), Henry Knox the second (1785-89). Under Knox the department was developed and well conducted until the establishment of the present War Department in 1789.
