A muscle situate at the posterior part of the thigh. It is flat, thin, narrow, and aponeurotic in its upper third; broader and fleshy in the middle, and tendinous below. It is attached above to the tuberosity of the ischium; and below-by a tendon, which has three divisions-to the outer condyle of the femur, and to the posterior and inner part of the internal tuberosity of the tibia. This muscle is a rotator inwards, and a flexor of the leg. It can also bend the thigh upon the leg. In standing it maintains the pelvis in position, and can even draw it downwards.
