Born in 1824, engaged in the Mexican War. In the Civil War he commanded a brigade at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. From 1863 to 1864 he commanded the Sixteenth Army Corps. He was Governor of Illinois from 1864 to 1869 and in 1872. He was a Republican U. S. Senator from 1873 to 1879, and was again Governor from 1884 to 1888.

- An enzyme that catalyzes the of groups from acetyl-CoA to arylamines. They have wide specificity for aromatic amines, particularly serotonin, and can also catalyze acetyl transfer between arylamines without CoA. EC 2.3.1.5.
