The systematic name of the Common Holly. The leaves of this plant have been recommended as tonic, astringent, and antiseptic, and have been prescribed in atonic gout, intermittents, dyspepsia, etc. Ilicine, the active principle, has also been advised. It is obtained by dissolving the alcoholic extract of the leaves of the holly in water, and successively treating it with the subacetate of lead, sulphuric acid, and carbonate of lime. The filtered and evaporated product is then dissolved in alcohol; and the mixture filtered and evaporated in shallow vessels.
