(1520-1595), an Elizabethan navigator who was engaged in the West India slave trade. His first voyage was made in 1562. In 1565 he captured a cargo of slaves in Guinea and traded along the coast of Florida. His last voyage was made in 1567 with Sir Francis Drake. He was knighted in 1588 for services against the Spanish Armada.
