The empire founded in 395 A. D., when the emperor, Theodosius the Great, divided the Roman Empire between his two sons, Arcadius and Honorius, giving the former the eastern division, the latter the western. The metropolis of this empire was Constantinople. The western division, whose capital was Rome, was called the EMPIRE OF THE WEST.
