(1741-1811) of Maryland, signer of the Declaration of Independence, was an ardent patriot, was a delegate to the Continental Congress 1774-78, became Chief Justice of the General Court of Maryland in 1791, and was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States in 1796. In 1804 he was impeached by the House of Representatives, on the ground of Federalist partisanship, but the Senate failed to sustain the charges.
