An instrument consisting of a horizontal circle moving round a vertical axis in fixed supports, and a vertical circle moving round a horizontal axis which is rigidly attached to the former axis. The vertical circle carries a telescope whose axis coincides with a diameter. The altitude and azimuth of a heavenly body can be observed by it when properly adjusted.
