surnamed. Conqueror of India and founder of the Mogul dynasty; born 1483; died at Agra, Dec. 28, 1530. He was a lineal descendant of Jenghiz Khan and Timur, and at the age of 12 years succeeded his father as king of Ferghana, a district to the east of Samarcand. In 1521, gathering an army of 12,000 followers, he invaded India, then preparing to revolt against the intolerable exactions of Ibrahim, emperor at Delhi; and in six years made himself absolute master of the whole country. He wrote a volume of "Memoirs" which shows him to have been a man of wellcultivated intellect, a sagacious observer, and a wise statesman.
