(1739-1800), an eminent statesman of South Carolina, attended the Stamp Act Congress of 1765, and the First and Second Continental Congresses. He was in 1776 the president of the State Government, and served as Governor 1779-1782. He was also Chancellor of the State, and a member of the Federal Convention of 1787. Rutledge ranked among the Federalist leaders. President Washington appointed him in 1795 Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, but the nomination was rejected by the Senate.
