(Rom. Hist.) A body of guards, instituted by Octavius (Augustus), in nine cohorts, three of which were stationed in Rome. Tiberius brought them all to Rome, and placed them in a permanent camp. Their constitution was entirely altered by Severus ; they were deprived of their privileges by Diocletian, and suppressed by Constantine.
