A noted American financier and writer; born in Philadelphia, Jan. 8, 1786; died there, Feb. 27, 1844. He was president of the United States Bank 1823-39, during Jackson's war against its being the depository of the government moneys, and the later speculations which ruined it. Besides miscellaneous writings, he published a "Commercial Digest", and "History of the Expedition under Lewis and Clarke to the Pacific Ocean".
