(1573-1644), Archbishop of Canterbury from 1633 to 1641, sought to establish uniformity of worship by enforcing conformity to the Church of England. He increased the power of the clergy and punished all dissenters. His persecutions of the Puritans, who maintained liberty of conscience, caused them to seek refuge in other lands and many came to America. He was impeached in 1642 and executed in 1644.
