A German poet and satirist; born at Frankenhausen, May 1, 1726; died at Brunswick, Jan. 30, 1777. He was professor of belles-lettres in the Carolinum, Brunswick (1761). He wrote: "The Brawler" (1744), the first burlesque heroic poem that had appeared in German; "Phaeton"; "The Handkerchief"; "Murner in Hell" (1757); "Fables and Tales" (1771); etc.; and translated into German hexameters Milton's "Paradise Lost" (1760). ("Poetical Works", 9 vols., 1763-65; posthumous writings, with biography, 1781.)
