An Italian dramatic poet and historian; born in Sant' Agata, Vercelli, July 25, 1737; died in Turin, Oct. 28, 1817. "Armida" (1770) and "Hannibal in Turin" (1771) are his best-known plays; his other gift displays itself in a "History of the Ancient Peoples of Italy" (1769).
