Born in Ohio in 1837, was Consul to Venice from 1861 to 1865. He became an editor of the Atlantic Monthly in 1866, and was editor-in-chief from 1872 to 1881. He is perhaps the most prominent of American novelists. He is an advocate of the modern "realistic fiction" which portrays life as it actually is. He has written lives of Abraham Lincoln and Rutherford B. Hayes.
