born in 1827, was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives in 1850, and Senator in 1856, and was a member for Michigan in the Chicago Republican Convention of 1860. He was a Representative in the U. S. Congress from 1865 to 1871, and a U. S. Senator from 1871 to 1883. He acted as president of the Senate from 1875 to 1877, during which time he presided over the impeachment trial of Secretary Belknap, and over the joint meetings during the electoral count of 1877.
