In geol. a term applied by Lyell to one of the three periods of the tertiary strata, each of which is characterized by containing a very different proportion of fossil shells of recent species. The earliest period, or eocene, is so called because the very small proportion of living species found fossil in the strata of this period indicates what may be considered the first commencement or dawn of life. The eocene beds are arranged in three groups, termed the lower, middle, and upper eocene. The lower eocene beds are well developed in the London basin; the middle and upper in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
