An electro-magnetic apparatus is occasionally used in cases of paralysis. A convenient form consists of a battery of six curved permanent magnets, and an intensity armature, around whose cylinders 1500 yards of fine insulated copper wire are coiled. The ends of the wire communicate respectively, with a pair of directors, each of which holds a piece of sponge, dipped in vinegar or a solution of common salt. When the armature is rotated, and a portion of the body is interposed between the directors, a succession of shocks is received.
