(1823-1887), of Washington, D. C., naturalist, in 1878 he succeeded Professor Joseph Henry as secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, and from 1871 was U. S. Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries, for his work in connection with which he received several medals and deco-rations from foreign powers, and membership in many learned societies.
